HMS ***BERLAND during "pre-wetting" trials in the Mediterranean, April 1954. Pre-wetting was a method of removing radioactive 'fall-out' from the ship's surfaces.
Trials ship, HMS ***BERLAND initiates her "Pre-wetting" system during testing in the Mediterranean. Pre-wetting was the method of using large numbers of water jets to spray the entire outer surface of the ship in preparation for encountering an area contaminated with radioactive 'fall-out'. The continual spray would not only make the surface wet, thereby preventing radioactive particles from sticking, but also wash them off.
