Please, what were Radio Cadets? Did BP have cadet radio officers?

I am intrigued by this photo as well. Firstly I did not know that BP employed cadets for training as R/O's and secondly this seems like a huge intake at a time when the R/O was becoming a dying breed. Maritime Safety, from your profile you cannot have been one of them so I would be most interested for you or someone else to fill us in on the details.

Some wearing glasses, so couldn't have been deck cadets.

Were the " radio cadets " being training for the off shore oil industry ?

I was employed as an r/o with BP during the 60is but they had no training school at that time but took r/os from the radio companies.
