Brocklebanks ss Matheran Boulogne 1931

The 3 pictures of the Matheran were taken in Boulogne 24 th Feb 1931 . My father who is on the left of both the top pictures was 3rd Mate and the other chap was cadet J Watson Ross who became a good friend of my fathers . Watson Ross rose to Master in Brocklebanks and was still sailing when I was at sea although I never had the opportunity to sail with him .
My late father Charles Braid Roger is seated in the upper left picture.

Lovely nostalgic photo's Derek. These are very similar in content and mood to those of Jo Dashwood-Howard's posted earlier that its uncanny.
It must have been a great time to be a Merchant sailor in those days.
Well done

Lovely pictures Derek as Stuart says. What wonderful nostalgia this board can generate. John Watson Ross was the first Captain I sailed with on Matra in 1964 and the last one I sailed with in Brock's on Mahsud in 1970. A bit straight laced at times but he was a very fine and very fair man to sail with in my opinion, I certainly sailed with a lot worse. I have very good memories of him and it is grand to see a photo like this of him in his early days. Splendid.

Nice one Derek; these pics add to the already fascinating set of Jo Dashwood-Howard that Stuart posted.

I only sailed with John Watson-Ross on a couple of coastals as third mate. My loss. Only really saw him on the bridge but struck me as unflappable.

My Father was 3 rd mate and Dave McGrouther was 4th Eng at that time ( Dave later became Supert. Engineer in Liverpool ).
I was interviewed by Dave at the start of my appenticeship . He asked what river Calcutta was on ( I had a shot at the Ganges . NO ! Then I tried the Indus which caused much laughter.) Dave then said its the Hoogley and never forget it ! Once youve been there you will never forget it anyway !.
He Was of course right
During the interview it turned out he knew my father well and he went on to relate a story where dad had washed Dave out of his bunk with a fire hose when putting him on the shake !
I thought that would not serve me well with the interview but much to my suprise it actually terminated the interview !
Brocks were a family affair and put a lot of weight on family continuing the tradition .
Dave said " Well thats all Laddie ; just go to Riversdale and pass the Entrance Exam and your in . ! "
Both my brother Cameron and I sailed with Brocks and my no 2 Son continues the tradition as 4th Engineer in Canada on a tanker / chemical carrier ; ungfortunatley not with Brocks ( All good things come to an end ! ).
