Type 1 Hunt class destroyer, original pennant No L42, built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead being laid down on the 18th November 1939, launched on 30th September 1940 and commissioned in April 1941. In may 1946 she paid off into the reserve fleet at Portsmouth, in 1951 she had a reprieve and became a sonar trials vessel until may/june 1963 when she paid off into reserve for the last time until sold to Faslane - this is the very last hunt class in existence at the time of the photo.
There is some disagreement as to wether she is a type 1 or the later type 2 - this stems from the fact that she was ordered under the september 1939 WEP (war Emergency plan) these ships were type two but Brocklesby was armed as a type 1 with two instead of the planned 3 twin 4" turrets, the reduction to two turrets was caused by stability problems, to rectify this the beam on the type 2 ships was increased by 2.5 feet, Brocklesby had the narrower beam so remains a class I regardless of her order date.
The Hunts were a fine little destroyer built on a modified Bittern class sloop design and intended for work in the narrow seas but saw service world wide, they were much better at air defence than most larger RN destroyers due to their HA 4" guns, they shone well at S boat hunting, for which duty they had a rapid firing 2 pounder mounted right on the stem.
