These johnson Line ships were smashinglooking vessels , though the cranes did somewhat spoil them. Anyway, think you'll find she's a bit older than you think . Johnson Line were one of those companies who were revolutionary in their naval architecture.
Stan - That was a very sad day when the river berths in Antwerp closed and ships moved down to the Leopold and Churchill . At least it was only a short hop ,skip and jump to the bars from the river berths. (Cloud)
From Berry Gunnarsson's site: "This series in eight line-vessel for the North Pacific was built 1948 - 1953. Seattle was the first one. Seattle, Golden Gate, Los Angeles, Lions Gate, California and Canada was built new at Kockums Shipyard. Silver Gate and Portland was built new at Howaltswerken in Kiel. The ship was delivered with two 7 cyl. two-stroke double-acting Kockum MAN - dieselengines delivering 16.400 i.h.p. This made the ship to one of the worlds fastest line-vessel."
I was in two of them, Portland (deck boy) and California (AB) and they were fast and handsome but I agree about the cranes, derricks would have been more reliable when thirty years old!
