The Dedalo was the last surviving example of nine Independence-class light aircraft carriers constructed during WW-II on light cruiser hulls. Built as a war emergency measure until new, larger, fleet aircraft carriers became available, the Indepence-class carriers were never intended to last very long. Broken out of lay-up and loaned to Spain in 1967, the Dedalo served the Spanish Navy until 1988, when she was finally replaced by the new Spanish aircraft carrier, Principe de Asturias. Although returned to the United States, plans to preserve the former USS Cabot as a museum ship in New Orleans fell though, and she was finally scrapped in 2002.
