Strange name for a German ship - "DALAELVFEN" is old Swedish for either "valley-river." or else a river from the district "Dalarna.

Could be this one: Hapag freighter Grimm (2) 1911 ex- Steinbeis, 1922 purchased from A.Bolten, 1926 returned to A.Bolten, renamed Dalalfven. 1,439

Yes it is the Aug. Bolten funnel markings.

Probably DALÄLFVEN (with Umlaut)? Hence the AE in the middle.

Yes, most certainly. But I still do not see why they would give her a Swedish name. I have found her on page 76 of Kludas/Bischoff Die Schiffe der Hamburg Amerika Linie, volum 2, 1907 - 1926. The photograph on that page removes any doubt about this being the ship. 4 Januar 1911 launched as STEINBEIS by Howaldtswerke, Kiel, for Aug. Bolten Hamburg. 1915 renamed DALÄLFVEN. 1920 taken over by Hapag and renamed GRIMM. 1922 back to Bolten, (and here Baltische Reederei is added to the Bolten name - maybe that has some relationship to the Swedish name.) 1923 again renamed DALÄLFVEN. 1945 sank in Hamburg after an air raid. 1947 raised and nominally handed to Belgium as war reparations. 1948 bought back by Aug. Bolten with help from Hapag. 1957 scrapped.

I like those pictures with people in it and something going on, you do get more of a relationshiop to the ship portrrayed.

Hi stein,
the Baltische Reederei GmbH was founded in 1913 by the company August Bolten, Wm. Miller`s Nachfolger. When in 1870 the Svenska Lloyd was founded August Bolten (1812-87) was a partner from the beginning and their general agent for Germany.
Therefore the ships had Swedish names like LJUSEÄLV, DALÄLFVEN, ANGERMANSÄLVEN, INDALSÄLVEN, UMEÄLF, GÖTAÄLF, PITEÄLV, LULEÄLV and some more to service the east coast of Sweden also.
