EMPIRE GANGWAY

Built as Weserwehr, a Hansa ‘A’ Type vessel for North German Lloyd by Deutsche Werft, Finkenwarder and launched on 14 December 1944.
In May 1945 she was seized by the Allies at Bremerhaven and after coming under the control of the MOWT was renamed Empire Gangway and loaned to the Canadian Government. She was then acquired by Clark SS Co., Montreal without name change. The same owners renamed her Novaport in 1950 and she is shown as such in this photograph taken at Halifax, Nova Scotia.
She was sold to Eagle Ocean Transport Inc., Panama in 1964 and renamed Fury.
On 1 December 1964 she was driven ashore in hurricane force winds on Wedge Island, Nova Scotia and ended up stranded on an inshore reef. She was abandoned and declared a total loss.
This photograph shows her after several months, maybe years after her stranding. Her hatch covers have gone and her funnel has broken and lies across the boat deck.
