Blue Flue's Eumaeus in Glasgow Docks in April 1972. Taken whilst on SSA's Icenic. Wasn't she one of the Dutch ships run by their associated company NMSO?. Built 1953 and 7841gross.
Yes, at that time she was operating for N.S.M. "Oceaan", transfered in 1962. Broken up 1978. Built 1953 7.841grt a product of Caledon SB&E Dundee
Yes Eumaeus was indeed an NSMO ship (Dutch Blue Flue) Built 1953 by Caladon, Dundee. She was the first of the mark 4 A boats, the change in design was the inclusion of a Poop hatch in place of the previously fitted poop lockers. The other A4''s were Adrastus, Elpenor and Lycaon.
I joined her straight from Riversdale College at the completion of my Phase-One training. This "promoted" me from Middy to Officer Cadet, and I joined her in Amsterdam along with another newly made up O/C Dave Mechlenburgh. I think it would be in September 1977. We finished the European coast-including Hamburg, Antwerp, Hull (for my 21st birthday, where do the years go!) Then to Liverpool, before sailing from Birkenhead. Out to the Far-East on what turned out to be the old girls final voyage. Dave and I transferred to the Perseus (a Super P) in Singapore and left the Eumaeus to her meeting with the breakers in Kaohsiung.
We had a really great trip and were made very welcome by a wonderful crew. The Master was I H Brower who had played football for PSV Eindhoven before running away to sea!
Anyway thanks for bringing back some great memories with your photo of her.
Nice Ship . One of the last built by the Dundee shipyard . I lived in Tayport Fife at the time 1953 and we could hear the riviters going all night . HappyDays
Eumaeus was my third ship as deckboy. I joined her in Hull on 5/5/59, and went to Hamburg, Amsterdam and Rotterdam before going back to Birkenhead. Looking back it was a happy ship, and I had finally got my head round the peggy's job and was actually good at it. The weather helped, flat calm sea and lovely sunny days throughout.
Bosun was Butch Mason, Lampy was Mick Austin
