Ships Nostalgia banner

Laid up temporarily in the Ocean Dock at Southampton in August 1972. She was built in San Francisco in 1942 and started life off as an aircraft carrier!
Following conversion to a passenger ship she came to Sitmar in the 1950s where she remained until about 1977/78 when she became PHILIPPINE TOURIST until going for scrap in 1980 following a fire.
QE2 observes the scene as she gets ready to depart for New York.

Did a couple of short passenger trips in her in the 70s. Sydney to Brisbane in 1973 I think it was and Sydney to Auckland in 1975. I seem to remember quite liking the vessel but I can't recall that much now except that the trans-Tasman trip was in June! Rounding North Cape was a bit of a blessing that voyage.

Went out with the family to Australia as £10 migrants in 1969. Nice trip.

There is a travel agency near Glasgow offering £10 Australian trips just now as a special promotion.

My parents arrived in Australia on the Fairsky in 1965. I didn't know it was once an aircraft carrier.
