Alright Al - how's it going - is this where you are working now?
DP3 - what's with the mooring arrangements on the legs - is it for flexibility?
Cheers
Alick
Just spent nine months on that vessel, joined it new at the builders yard in Singapore. She is DP class 3 and the anchor (8) arrangement are for North Sea contracts, mainly Norwegian sector. They are going for DP anchor assist, which this vessel is capable of having the latest Kongsberg DP system with integrated mooring system
8 point moorings without anchor-assist isn't a valid configuration for northern North Sea. So it is a kind of necessity to go for anchor assist, or a 12-point spread.
I think the owners are really looking for the DP contracts if possible, with the possibility of being able to do a moored operation if the client doesn't require the flexibility (and high operating costs) of a DP operation at the installation.
We had to go on a special DP course to cover the latest Kongsberg integrated pos-moor system. the Norwegian contractrors insisted on it being used for the up coming contract in Norway, they maintain that is the future in the Norwegian sector, at least on Accommodation vessels anyway. As far as I am aware there are only two flotells with DP class 3 operating in the North Sea. Regalia and Floatel Superior
Hi Ray - found out that the upcoming Talisman job is on DP3, and subsequent Statoil contract should be - also.
If I can re-word:
For northern North Sea - an anchored semi must either be 12-point mooring or 8-point with anchor-assist. So, to obviate the need to fit 12 anchorwinches - they chose to go for 8 with AA (since they had the DP system already).
So- in order to compete with other flotels on a moored contract - they went for 8-point/AA.
Anchor assist on an 8-point spread is not new - just the integration with the latest Kongsberg DP system.
