FRUBEL MONICA

FRUBEL MONICA

Built 1949 by S.A. Cockerill-Ougrée, Hoboken # 734 for Belgian Fruit Lines, S.A., Antwerp
GRT 3079. IMO 5122138.

1964: TAITSING Taiwan Navigation Co., Ltd., Keelung
1972: Demolition commenced December 20 at Kaohsiung.

In 1949, the "Frubel Monica" of the former Belgian Fruit Lines shipping company was one of the first refrigerated vessels to transport bananas and tropical fruit to the port of Antwerp. In the cold rooms, the exotic fruits cannot ripen or rot. The fruit survives the long journey from Africa and South America to Antwerp. Bananas are first stored in the refrigerator as large bunches. Later it appears that more cargo fits on board when the bananas are packed in boxes. Port of Antwerp is still known worldwide as a port for fresh fruit and is the largest banana port in Europe.

Two of CMBs five "Albertville" type passenger/cargo liners (1948-50) alongside on the right.
Unless my old eyes deceive me, further one has name on stern "Leop...." so "Leopoldville" (1948; 10,901grt)?
