Full-rigged ship British Empire

A partial restoration of a very badly faded and damaged photo from pre-WW1. (I stopped 'restoring' it when I realised I was doing more harm than good.)
The ship's bosun, my maternal grandfather Charles Smith, is highlighted at right. The initials S F at bottom right would suggest this photo montage was made in San Francisco.

Did you "paint" the hull? (The bow profile doesn't look right.) A wonderful memento, that there's a bit of "patina" on an old picture is as it should be. Captain, two mates, a steward, a bosun, and three apprentices?

Yes, stein, I tried to make a very faint hull more visible, and rather overdid it. Your knowledge of who's likely to be in the group is superior to mine, but certainly there seem to be five older men and three younger ones.

This edited version of the image may be fractionally better, stein. The original is so faint it's hard to make out.

Sea Breezes for February and March 1933 has 8 pages on the ship by a Captain A. Darling who served as apprentice and second mate in her from 1892 to 1897. He has a crew picture illustrating the article, but i don't see any likeness between the faces above and those in that picture.

I think my Grandad would have been about 41 in 1897. He looks older in the above photo, so he probably joined the ship after Capt Darling (shades of Blackadder!) left it.
