Ship Events Data
1923-01-29: Final Fate:
The steam ship 'BEUKELSDYK' (1903) of the Holland America Line, sailed in ballast from Rotterdam to Narvik, through the fjords along the Norwegian coast. Occasionally there were snow showers and poor visibility. At 3.18 am in the morning of 29.01.1923 they passed Støtt and 10 minutes later the northwest point of Kuna. Full speed, 10 mph. At 03.35 am visibility became very poor and the pilot did not dare to sail well. Shortly afterwards, the ship hit the cliffs violently on the starboard side. An accident in the engine room made the ship, which was afloat again at 04.15, unmaneuverable. In the holds 2,4,5 and 6 watering was done quickly and the boiler room was flooded, there was also no anchoring. She floated on and over the rocks and was finally full of water and she got sideways over the port at 6:00 am. All those on board left the ship and landed safely. The ship could no longer be salvaged and was wrecked on the spot after a few months.
