Gross Tonnage:231 - LOA:31.4 Metres - Beam:8.1 Metres

Sold to breakers at Troon 1972.

The crane pictured had her own power. Judging by the picture the tug would have had a hell of a length of towing gear out, much too long for moving around the dock systems.NB:the navigation bridge.
The BIG crane that did need towing was the 'Mammoth'.

hello Jim I think the MAMMOTH from the pool is self propelled by 2 vioth engines or is this a different crane and you are right that crane in the pic is not being towed gear not short enough I towed SIMSON 3 in south Wales docks very short bridle tow loved it all mine no pilot bloody great contact sport when going through a passage 3ft each side here we go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, in the period that the Grassgarth is shown the Mammoth was a steam crane, I believe originally coal fired and later converted to oil, and certainly didn't have Voight propulsion. When the Mammoth had to move between docks or transverse the Mersey she was always was attended by two Alex Tugs.
A point to ponder....she was a cow to tow and caught the wind something chronic.

(I think you are getting mixed up with the 'Mersey Mammoth' if you type in Mammoth in the search box you will see examples of both vessels.) Regards Jim

Yes thats right Jim 'Mersey Mammoth' and the Simson 3 was a dog to move in the dock when the wind was up, old coal burner docks board was BTDB good hours good money all gone shame Regards Fred
