Good photograph of one of the more obscure wharves on London River. Owned by Reed's Paper , or it used to be and can remember Tate & Lyle utilising it to discharge sugar there into "Tipper Lorries" when they had problems at Silvertown. Who remember that "pub" opposite "End of the world" I think it was called - Interesting to say the least(Jester)
Hi Stan,
At 16 I sailed to New Zealand as a passenger on the Rangitoto in 1957 from Tilbury, would that be the landing stage she sailed from.
Cheers.
PS Any ideas to the names of the ships in the photo, the nearest one looks like Scotland or something like that.
Stumps - the pub near Tilbury landing stage is 'World's End' still in business.
Shipmate17 -that is where Rangitoto would have sailed from.
The Totland of Stephenson Clarke is discharging coal and the white ship on landing stage is one of the Russian cruise ships often seen there during 1960's and 70's.
Possibly Azerbaijan or Maria Ulyanova.
Regards
Stan
Stan - Sorry mate , I was referring to the pub opposite the entrace to Imperial Wharf , was set back a bit from the road and had a sort of car-park. Can't for the life of me remember the name (MAD)
"The Hit or Miss" was the pub by Imperial Wharf.
Imperial Wharf is no longer used for cargo handling.
Totland would be discharging coal for the paper mill's boiler house, while the unidentified ship on the outer berth would probably have been bringing in pulp.
