Some of the Muller vessels had I believe former U. Boat engines fitted, they certainly had a distinctive whine when manoeuvring.

Thank You Thomas, it was the 1956 version I remember coming into the Tees, any info on her engine and possible source? She had a distinctive whine. The talk in the Shipyard where I worked was that she had a reconditioned ex U. Boat engine fitted or possibly the same make?

Hi chadburn,
ORTRUD and GRETCHEN MÜLLER had the same type of engines, as you correctly said reconditioned U Boot diesels.
Built by Fried. Krupp, Germaniawerft A.-G., Kiel for U Boot service.
6 cyl. 4 stroke, 400 mm piston diameter x 460 mm piston stroke travel, 1.100 PSe (bhp), 375 revs.
GRETCHEN`s engine was built in 1941, for ORTRUD there is no year of make stated in GL register.
Best wishes, Manfred
