Guilford, sinking.

Guilford, sinking.

My grandfather's writing on the back of this photo:-

'American steamer 'Guilford' abandoned in sinking condition 230 miles east of New York on March 7 1920 during blizzard. Crew rescued'.

I have, so far, been unable to find out anything about this incident.

Esxcellent picture - and I'm happy not to have been on the ship, even if the crew was rescued.
No American "Guildford", but there was a "Guilford". Looks like the ship was rescued, too, and towed in, as it was scrapped in 1923.

kgvm, you are probably correct - this pic is one of two, and obviously taken within a couple of minutes of each other - one says "Guildford" and the other says "Guilford", now I can hopefully search in the right direction for hw it came about.
