Gullfoss

Gullfoss

Built in Denmark in 1912, Gullfoss and her sister Godafoss established the first steam-ship service in Iceland, using the pier at Hafnarfjordur as there were then no facilities in Reykjavik. This model of Gullfoss is displayed in the Hafnarfjordur Museum - www.hafnerfjordur.is

Wow - in colour! Normally these old ships are only shown on old faithful black/white photos... Thanks for posting!
After the war a new generation of GULLFOSS was built, the passenger shipping line between Iceland to the port of Copenhagen, for EIMSKIP, the former state owned (I think nowadays privatised?) shipping company. Nowadays, to most passengers relief, the line from and to Iceland to rest of Scandinavia/Nordic mainland is replaced by airlines - the crossing on the North Sea and northern Atlantic to and from Iceland was often rough -and long.
