Any idea what that entrance cut would be for. It is maybe 30 feet (10 metres) wide at the entrance, and 100 feet long (30 metres) and the three sides are stone walls just as the photograph shows facing the water.

That was the jetty used to receive engine castings for machining and final assembly and also for transporting finished machinery. In those days H&W had it's own little cargo steamer Camel operated for them by Burns & Laird. This little vessel shuttled between the various H&W shipyards, foundries and engine works delivering raw materials and collecting finished items.
