Westland Wessex HAS.1 of 845 NAS with other Wessex and Whirlwind HAS.7 of 846 NAS on deck. Disembarked on 14 Dec 1962 for operations from Borneo.

With the ‘J’ on the fuselage and what appears to be an ‘A’ on the tail, that suggests the aircraft in flight is XP142 which was later converted to HAS.3 and saw service with Hampshire, Fife and Antrim.

Furthermore, if it is the same helicopter, then, some twenty years after this photograph was taken, it was involved in a Special Forces extraction from South Georgia and later attacked (with depth charges) and damaged ARA Santa Fe (Argentine Balao-class submarine) outside Grytviken, South Georgia.

Is this the chopper known as Humphrey when serving on Antrim in the Falklands?

Yes, Humphrey operated from HMS Antrim when she was Flagship of Operation Paraquet, the recovery of South Georgia in April 1982.

Thanks Nevasa, have to say that the crest on her engine housing looks an awful like Bulwark's!!!

I wonder how many of those 34 listed squadrons still exist in service?
