The skipper at the time was Captain John Tait who was also been my Commanding Officer at HMS Mercury circa 1984. He unfortunately passed away a couple of years ago, which was a great shame as he was a really nice man and a gentleman.
After she was fitted with towed array ,did she not lose the use of the flight deck because it was fitted further fwd than the rest of the towed array conversions??
so she then became the only leander not to be able to operate a helicopter
I visited her in early 1989 and she was still able to operate a helicopter, but unable to stow one in the hangar as the towed array instrumentation/control gear was housed in it.
From memory ARETHUSA had the same towed array layout as CLEOPATRA (without the stern extension) but was still able to use the hangar for the Wasp. Perhaps it was a first of class thing with CLEO as I think she was the first ship to be fittted with the towed array?
Indeed Cleo had all her TA electronics in the hanger, bit of a huge oversight! A helecopter is a crutial tool if you are an anti submarine frigate! Yes as mentioned she could still land a lynx though.
Sirius, Argonaut and Pheobe had all there TA electronics routed down to the old forward seacat magazine, they also had the extended transom on the rear to make more room for helo operation but actually put huge stress on the back of the ship, Sirius developed some cracks when the TA was deployed in rough weather.
