HMS CONQUEROR

HMS CONQUEROR

Nuclear submarine HMS Conqueror arriving UK port in 1980's

Unique in post ww2 naval history for sinking the cruiser General Belgrano,ex USS Phoenix in 1982.The only such action to date.

The USN was most surprised she sank as all her sisters had been heavily damaged in WW2 from torpedoes and survived with exception of the USS Helena.

However if you leave all the watertight doors open in a combat zone, you end up at the botom of the Atlantic.

Our crew dropped her some mail back in 82 as she crossed the line northbound for the UK.

Dear Shaun

No, I was guessing as there are no details on slide, and Devonport was her home base.

Is it Rosyth ?

Love your latest pictures, love to swap places !

Too many shore cranes and the tall tower is not of Rosyth dockyard, could be wrong tho, things alter in such a short time, last time that I was at the Rosyth D/yard was in 1970 whilst still in the navy.

Don't think it's a Dockyard as the tug isn't right.
Perhaps the Thames/Mersey/Humber?

How about Southampton ... large tug is Red Funnel Sir Bevois or Hamtun.

Looks like Southampton with the old (now demolished) Marchwood power station and Husbands shipyard in the background.
