No it's not. It's HMS Jupiter.
I don't think there were any Type 12's left in 1989.

Certainly a LEANDER Class but I thought that JUPITER was a Sea Wolf Leander by the late '80's and the funnel on this shot is not a Wolf Leander.

Its one the batch 2TA Leanders. Only four to choose from, Cleopatra, Sirius, Argonaut or Phoebe.

I'm dont know the names/numbers of the top arials/antenas on the formast, but Sirius and Pheobe had the Cone varient which this ship does not.

Also hard to tell from the photo but there apears to be a lack of Scott comunication towers. I could infact be HMS Juno. She also had the smaller radar fitted to the rear mast when converted to a training ship. Cant really tell with all that water.

Hi Macca, you are right about Juno having the smaller radar fitted for her training ship role, but she retained the original main mast rather than the smaller light weight one seen in this picture. Also Juno's foremast had a lot less equipment after her refit. Phoebe did have the cone and arrow top aerial, along with the Cleopatra, but I can only find pictures of Sirius in her towed array days with the other kind. So maybe we can narrow it down to Sirius......or Argonaut.

The Small radar you refer to is a 1010 IFF Interrogator, and the cone on the foremast is an ESM Antenna. This configuration is particular to the ADAWS Fitted Leanders - AKA Ikara Leanders.

I'd say that this mast/aerial configuration makes this an 'Ikara' Leander - now IKL's with this ESM fit as I remember were (How many more have I missed?):
Leander, Ajax, Euraylus, Galatea, Naiad, Arethusa, Dido

And of course the gunless Juno had the same mast Aerial arrays but no combat system.

******, I think your bang on. Now I've found the zoom feature its all a bit clearer.

Tomvart, thanks for the tech info although I agree with ****** that the main mast on this ship is a lightweight, only making it possible to be a towed array ship. Also the Ikara ships had Scott antena supports on the formast.

But why would Sirius and Arganout have a different ESM from their two sister ships??

Looking at other batch 2's, they seem to be split between 2 different fits. Minerva and Danae were both different as well. I think the differences date back to the conversion to Batch 2.

Gentlemen
From close examination of my negs and, more importantly, my diary - I find that this was taken during Exercise Springtrain 89. Probably early April.
The only other Leanders taking part were Phoebe and Sirius so it is one of them. Most likely Phoebe as we RAS'd her more frequently.
I noted that the weather was terrible for most of the Exercise.
