The MS ITALIA was a 21,000 GRT HAPAG passenger ship and a frequent guest at Steubenhöft, Cuxhaven.
The MS Italia was launched as KUNGSHOLM on 17 March 1928 at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg. The client for the new ship was Svenska Amerika Linjen (SAL) from Gothenburg. Completion took place on 13 October 1928. During the subsequent test voyage, an explosion occurred on board which cost the lives of three men. The ship left Gothenburg for its maiden voyage to New York on 24 November 1928.
After the outbreak of war in 1939, the SAL avoided the unsafe European waters and carried out cruises from New York. On January 2, 1942, KUNGSHOLM became an active participant in the war. The SAL sold the ship to the US War Shipping Administration, which renamed it JOHN ERICSSON and had it operated as a troop carrier by the United States Lines. In 1947, the JOHN ERICSSON suffered severe fire damage. SAL bought the damaged ship back, but sold it in the same year to Home Lines (South Atlantic Lines) from Panama. The new owner had the ship repaired in Genoa and rebuilt in keeping with the times. The ship was renamed ITALIA on 8 April 1948.

When in the 1950s the demand for transatlantic voyages in Germany grew again, the Hamburg-Amerika-Linie (HAPAG) took over the management of the ship for the Home Lines in 1952. The first captain of ITALIA was Paul Thormöhlen, later captain of the unforgettable TS HANSEATIC. The following eight years the ITALIA, at that time the largest ship sailing under German flag, was frequently seen on the Elbe and in Cuxhaven. During a mooring manoeuvre at the Steubenhöft in Cuxhaven the tug FAIRPLAY I got in front of the bow of the liner and was pushed under water. Two people were killed in this accident, which was observed by the horrified spectators at the passenger terminal.
Shortly before the end of the Hapag charter in 1959, the ITALIA moved from the heavily frequented destination port of New York to Quebec, Canada, before operating from 1961 on the New York - Nassau (Bahamas) route and being used on the side for cruises. In 1964 the ITALIA was sold to Freeport Bahama Enterprises as hotel ship IMPERIAL BAHAMA.
The ship was scrapped in 1965 in Bilbao.

"Flag says USA." A national flag flown from the foremast, as seen in this photo, is what is known as a "courtesy flag", meaning that it is the national flag of the port in which the ship happens to be at the time, not the flag of the nation in which the ship is registered. The ship's flag of registry would be flown from a gaff on the main mast or, if the ship does not have one of those (as is frequently the case), then from the stern. It is customary for all merchant vessels, and most naval vessels, to fly "courtesy flags". However, the U.S. Navy never does that, presumably because the U.S. Navy is devoid of any sense of courtesy.

In addition to the "courtesy flag", an "H" flag is clearly visible, indicating that the ship has a pilot on board. I do not know what the other two flags are. However, the one beside the American flag might be a "Q" flag, indicating the ship is clean and requests customs and immigration clearance, while the port outboard flag could be the steamship company's "House Flag". Their "House Flag" was white with a blue circle in the middle with a gold crown in it.

Klaatu. Sorry, I should have been clearer for what I meant as:

First part: 'Flag says USA' as meaning The COURTESY flag says USA. Indicating the ship is at a US port.

Second part: 'Home Lines based in New York'. Most of Home Lines' cruises were done from New York... as in 'based in NY'.

This information together with the ice, the apparent Moran tug, all says the answer in the first question, LOCATION? New York and in mid winter!
