Korean car carrier at Alang, India, January 1995; for scrap following fire. Vessel contained over 9,000 cars/vans totally destroyed whilst en-route for N Europe.
An interesting photo, but over 9,000 vehicles!! (EEK)
There is no car carrier currently in the World that can load that many cars. The MAGNOLIA ACE's capacity was actually around 4,000 units so, assuming she was fully loaded, I imagine that just over 4,000 vehicles were destroyed.

I did hear the the greatest marine casualty in financial terms was a collision between two car carriers, one full of Toyotas, somewhere to the west of the Gibralta Strait in which both sank. Is it true?
The figure of over 9,000 cars was what was stated at the time, I have no way of verifying but had no reason to disbelieve. The people who purchased the vessel for scrap had big problems with Indian Customs who at one stage wanted to charge import duty for each vehicle, even though they were all completely burnt out. The fire was put out by the salvage vessel Salvanguard. I was on board Salvaliant who took the tow to Alang. Cause of the fire was stated as electrical fault in one of the vehicles. I have some other internal photos somewhere which I'll post later.
