Marga Kiepe

Marga Kiepe

Owned and Captained by the late Herman Kiepe of Haren ems, My cabin was forw'd with a small diesel stove to keep warm, this photo was taken about early 70s when I was on it and she still had no Radar, no VHF,and no autopilot, we sailed mostly with a crew of 3, Capt and Mate lived aft and the A/B (me) forw'd, every 2 hours whilst at sea a bell was rung forw'd for me to go to the Engine Room grease up and pump up the fuel day tank (By Hand of Course)and then give the watchkeeper a spell on the wheel, Dayroom on Deck was the Capt's Watchtower.

Looks like a good one to avoid peter.Did she have a steering engine? I sailed on the Burtonia,a vessel of similar vintage and her steering gear was direct drive , it took 2 men to get her around the apex into the trent.Les

According to my GL register she was well equipped with an echo sounder. (Jester)
But let´s be fair, she was a ship and therefore had a soul.(A)

Hi Les,
The steering was direct drive and a ***** to steer, I only did 5 months on this one,
Rob, Coul'nt throw the Capt as he was the Capt and also very very heavy,
On one occasion we went to Nijmegen on the town quay to load a cargo of Bones for the Clarks wharf Erith for the Glue works we went downriver to Roterdam stieljeskade and laid weathbound for about 10 days on arrival at Erith the bearth was not available so we were to lay on the buoys all over Xmas, I then asked the old man if i could go home to Ipswich just for 2 Days at Xmas he said no cos who,s gonna swing off the generator to start it to charge the batteries(Deutz 2 flywheel job) the capt could;nt because he was too old and the mate coul'nt cos he was too fat, anyway come Christmas day after I cooked the dinner I served theirs up in the Capts Dayroom and i'm sat all alone down below to eat mine and listening to the Radio, no TV onboard..thats when i gave him my 48 hrs (after dinner)
Finally when we got alongside the wharf the mate and i tried to pull the Tarps back to roll em up but they were stuck, what had happend was that the cargo was completly full of maggots and even between the hatch tarps they were stuck, we or I had to get the deckwash hose out and blow water between the tarps to release the maggots or suction that they were causing, bye the way he woul'nt let me sign off in Erith but only in Duisburg with a bad dishcharge in my book saying that I left before my 48 hrs..

Happy Days eh Gents

I have to say it sounds a nightmare. I was lucky with skippers except for one who shall remain nameless because he is still in the game. He used to turn off the booster for the tv aerial at 10pm so couldnt watch telly and that was one of his more endearing habits.

At least you had a TV, one thing I did learn well on that ship was to take a bearing on the DF cos that was all she had on the bridge and one of those big clock type sounders, and the wheel was taller than me...

TV at sea was annoying I remember watching the league cup final in 96 Leeds v Villa we lost the signal for the second half. Probably just as well because Villa beat us 3-0.
