Mayflower II sailed from Plymouth Devon, to Plymouth Massachusetts on April 20th 1957 as a goodwill gift from Britain to the people of the United States.
The crew were allotted two-berth cabins in the tween decks constructed of hardboard and painted grey, the crew numbered about thirty and several had sailed with Captain Villiers before, the first mate Godfrey Wicksteed was a shipmate with him on the four-masted barque Bellands in the early 1920s. This voyage was expected to take thirty-five to forty days.
