Meeching's first sail at Eastbourne (4)

This superb model of Newhaven's former harbour tug Meeching was very kindly given to as her historian by Mr & Mrs Michael Summers. The model was built by Mrs Summers' late father, Mr Fred Davies.

The model's radio gear has been updated to 2.4GHz and the electrics have been replaced throughout. A few cosmetic touches were then all she needed.

On the water, she handles superbly, a real credit to her builder.

Hi Meechingman,

Nice model and details, what scale was it built to, or what are the model's dimensions?
Thank you,

She was scratch built, from photos and observations rather than plans. Approx 1:36 scale, which makes the model around 33" long. The superstructure is just a tiny bit over true scale size, but nevertheless when she's out on the water she does look right.

I wondered if she'd heel in a turn with all that superstructure, tripod mast and exhaust stacks, but that's all made out of plastic card and is very light. The result is a very stable tug, even in a tight high speed turn. In fact I can tell you that she rolls less than the real tug!

Hi,
Thanks for the info, I am experimenting with various material for superstructures and ballasting to give them a smooth roll when turning, not a wobbling model as seen on videos. If to wobbly, i place some weight higher up, on deck or inside wheelhouse.
My tug model on this site is the "Gaston", scale 1/50, about 19" long. I am still an apprentice builder.
