Melody

Melody at Genoa. Much criticised when she was first introduced into service as Atlantic for Home Lines. Now she looks to be a real beauty when compared alongside new cruise ships.

I remember how shocked people were when this shoe box came into service, and how awful she looked docked in Manhattan, right next to the superb OCEANIC. How ships looked still mattered back then!

I was out on Hamilton Harbour is a dory to see ATLANTIC arrive. Everyone was shocked! We were used to DORIC and OCEANIC and this new box was so ugly. I didn't see her so much as ugly, more than disappointment. A few changes and she could have been 'pretty'. HOMERIC was not that pretty either, ruined by the funnel. That said, I did like to sail in ATLANTIC and HOMERIC and Home Line style was always the same. In the ATLANTIC, see as MELODY, I wish she was still with us! All is forgiven!

In 50,60, etc years time - Will our descendants be looking back with fond affection at today's designs?

And: What will future Naval Architects produce to ensure outrage in tradition?

I remember back in the early 1980's Home Lines released a painting of the MV Atlantic while she was under construction and she looked quite sleek. The reality was a bit different though. She wasn't exactly butt-ugly, but she wasn't long, low and sleek like her running mate the SS Oceanic. Several years later Home Lines painted a thick blue racing stripe down her side, but it did little to help her looks.

After joining the Premier Cruise Lines fleet she had her hull painted red which I think made her look quite a bit better than in her Home Lines colors. Love the red color or not, it certainly broke up that slab-sidded look where it was tough to tell where hull ended and the superstructure began.

I did a Bahamas cruise aboard the Atlantic in July 1990 when she was with Premier Cruise Lines and she was a nice step up from my previous cruise with Premier on their SS Royale. The interiors were actually very nice for that time and everything looked new and the ship had the cleanest smell of any ship I have ever sailed on. In fact, other than the Royale, which smelled of stale cigarette smoke in some of her lounges, all of the other Premier ships (Atlantic, Oceanic and Majestic) had a very pleasant clean smell, even more so than many brand new ships that I have sailed on.

So yes, I have some fond memories of the Atlantic and of all the Premier fleet, back when they were the "Official Cruise Line of Walt Disney World". If I remember correctly, Premier at that time carried more guests in a year than any other cruise line except Carnival and Royal Caribbean. Truly a very popular cruise line and the Atlantic was one of the jewels in their crown. Hopefully someone will be able to rescue her for further use, but I have a feeling she will be joining her former Premier fleet-mates in that part of heaven where all good ships go.
