Miss Victoria Drummond, M.B.E.

Victoria Drummond was born 14th Oct.1894. She was a god-daughter of Queen Victoria. She began her career with a 5 year apprenticeship at the Caledon shipyard before going to sea as a marine engineer in 1922. Her first ship was the Blue Funnel,ANCHISES. She was at sea for 40 years and during that time she was an engineer in the BRITISH MONARCH at the time of the loss of the apprentice in New Zealand, of whom there has recently been some mention of on SN..
Miss Drummond died on Christmas Day, 1978, aged, 84.
(She was at sea during the war, and anyone who may like to read about her life can do so by obtaining the book, VICTORIA DRUMMOND, Marine Engineer-written by her niece, Cherry Drummond, and published in 1994.)

That is one hell of a record for a woman back in those days.
She deserved the M.B.E.

The caption on the photograph, of Victoria being awarded an O.B.E., is incorrect; it was the M.B.E. that she was awarded. She was also awarded a Lloyd's medal for bravery at sea when the s.s.BONITA was bombed.
