Built as a replacement for 'Maui Pomare' for the Auckland-Cook Islands trade. Carried 40 passengers and some refrigerated and general cargo
1974: Taken over by Royal NZ Navy, converted into survey ship, r/n HMNZS Monowai
2003: Broken up at Cadiz.

Great original pic thanks Brent.Can still remember her back in 1961 at i think Marsden Wharf AK.Me a telegram boy.Cheers Bryan.

Hi Bryan--always thought she was a particularly smart-looking little ship. A friend who worked for the local newspaper got me this pic in 1961. Any new NZ ship got its picture in the paper in those days. Re 'telegram boy'--did you happen to keep your camera handy?

I seem to remember her as the subject of a cut away drawing in the Eagle.

Nice one Scouse--I don't think I've seen an 'Eagle' since the 1950's--if you're talking about the boys' comic book?

i think the eagle drawings are here on sN. A friend's dad worked on her at Lithgows when she became the Monowai.

'twas me wot put them on. I don't suppose your friend's dad took any photos of her under conversion. I've got some but they are not good I'm afraid.
