Coastie, you are wrong (again). The current station was built in the early 1980s (1981/82?). Since that build the EPR was added and the toilet/locker rooms extended.
The picture, I think, is taken from the Knab car park. The station is next to a 9 hole golf course and the kirk yard and also over looks the South entrance to Lerwick Harbour. It looks isolated but a 5 minute walk down the hill the other way takes you right into the cnetre of Lerwick.
Having never been there, it would be as unwise as it is unkind for me to comment too strongly, but the first impression does not move me to suggest the architecture is quite of the same standard as John Nash (18 January 1752 13 May 1835). It seems a tad stark and unwelcoming (as a building) although I am sure the people are quite the opposite.
The question was, "was it purpose built or an adaptation of a previous building". The building we see in this picture is an adaptation of a previous building with, as you say, the EPR added and toilet and locker rooms extended.
I am trying to work out why one would need to add: Ethylene Propylene Rubber, is it part of the MCA uniform? Or have I misunderstood and you are housing the Ejército Popular Revolucionario, that well known Mexican guerrilla group?
