OREMINA

OREMINA

Houlder Brothers' OREMINA, built by Wm.Gray at Hartlepool in 1956, was photographed at a South Wales port, presumably Port Talbot, close to the laid up MAPLEDORE, in the late 1950's

I don't think this is Port Talbot or any other port in South Wales. Unfortunately, I cannot offer any alternative location where this photo might have been taken.

Two of my copyright photographs of the laid up MAPLEDORE, taken by the late Des Harris of Penarth, can be seen in this web link:

Incidentally, MAPLEDORE was the first ship I recall seeing, in 1960, laid up at Portishead soon after I moved there with my family. I could see the ship from the balcony at the back of the house, but she soon sailed over to Newport for breaking.

I might owe you an apology on this one Cranfield. I've had a look at the link you posted above and the bottom two photos of Mapledore are definitely in Port Talbot - the hills in the background give that away. However, having had a look at the photo above, there seems to be a storage tank just forward of Oremina's accommodation. That storage tank appears to be the same one that appears just forward of the Mapledore in the lower photo. Also, the buoy to which the stern of the Oremina is moored seems to be the same type as that alongside Mapledore, also in the lower photo. What's throwing me is that power station-like building to the left of Oremina's bow. I can't recall seeing that building on Port Talbot docks around about 1960. If it wasn't for that building, I would definitely say it was Port Talbot.

Best wishes
