WAS TO BE BASED AT PORTLAND NAVAL BASE FOR HER ENTIRE CAREER (NOTE THE TORPEDO DAVITT WITH DINGY, WAS TO REMOVED AT A LATER DATE) AND IS STILL THERE AT PORTLAND PORT TO THIS DAY, NOW CALLED RUFUS CASTLE. SHE IS AT PRESENT UP FOR SALE.

I can't see anything there to say why changed from Beagle to Basset?

Yes sorry Kinnie, senior moment again. Not sure really but perhaps Eagle/Beagle??. other than that I've no idea. Or maybe perhaps their Lordships didn't wan't an ordinary old PAS tug named after quite a well known naval vessel. Cheers.

I think it might have been because someone might hear her as Eagle in radio traffic. HMS Eagle was in commission at about this time. I know there has been a few RFA ships renamed to avoid confusion. Just my thoughts but probably wrong!

BASSET renamed 03/06/1965 to free the name BEAGLE for the new BULLDOG class coastal survey ship.

Come on Old Strawberry all the times you have passed that point and you don't know she is passing HMS Dolphin now called Fort Blockhouse on her way into the Solent!

Sorry Bosun, I'll consider Myself "Bxllxxked". If I had seen the escape tower at "Dolphin" that would have clinched it. Cheers.
