Never liked seeing a house flag on a foremast yardarm halyard, when the subject vessel had a mainmast top, from where the house flag should have been flown!! Having said that, I was an apprentice on "Port Napier" when the house flag was flown in the above manner - have to admit that a house flag lasted longer and stayed cleaner on the yard arm!! Seeing this photo reminds me that the mainmast steaming light was offset to port, which indicated that the topmast was maybe not directly over the keel?
