Completed by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey in 1921, one of 16 WWI standard '535s' built for the United States Shipping Board. Originally designed as troop transports/hospital ships, none were completed before hostilities ended.

The 'Empire State', the nickname of New York State, began a San Francisco-Far Eastern service in 1921, managed by the Pacific Mail for the USSB. Renamed 'President Wilson' the following year.

In 1925 Pacific Mail taken was over by the Dollar Line, which purchased the Pacific Mail's 535s from the USSB.

Began operating a round the World service in 1927.

In 1938 the US Government took over the financially troubled Dollar Line and it was reorganized as the American President Lines.

The 'Empire State' became the 'Maria Pipa' when purchased by Ybarra & Cia in 1940. Placed on a Barcelona-River Plate route, she was renamed 'Cabo de Hornos the same year.

Broken up at Avilés in 1959, she was the last 535 afloat.
