She survived the war, but was used as an A Bomb Target in 1946 and survived two tests, although severely contaminated. Eventually sank some six months later when she capsized after minor damage to her stern that nobody was available, or willing to rectify.
The tug in the photo looks very American. Is the photo from the post war period, John?
The other interesting point about this class of cruiser was their extremely sophisticated and very troublesome high pressure steam propulsion system. Although the American crew that brought her from Balboa to Pearl Harbour were trained by Kriegsmarine personnel they were unable to maintain the machinery properly and a complete system breakdown occurred and she had to be taken in tow.

Fred the picture was taken when the Prince Eugen was under the control of the american navy, notice the stars and stripes flying from the aft mast. What a great looking ship for that time.

John, she was a great looking warship for any time, but like many great looking ladies, she was a high maintenance number.

I suppose being a person who really did not know the War,it would have been good if TIRPITZ could have been captured intact and maybe preserved to let us see just what fine ships the German Navy had although that might not have gone down well in post war years.

As John pointed out she is wearing the Stars and Stripes, she is seen here arriving at Boston MA on the 22 Jan 1946 for examination by the USN.
She was a great ship and exactly what you get when everyone else builds cruisers to a 10,000 ton rule and yours weighs 14,000 standard and 19,000 full load

I guess they did look sinister, but surely that was the idea. If you can design a good warship and make it look intimidating to the enemy you have done a good job!

I was wondering on the correct spelling, apart from the Eugen - is it Prince or Prinz ?

From this site, it suggests the latter?
