RFA TIDE Class fleet tanker

RFA TIDE Class fleet tanker

A nice shot of an 'old' TIDE Class fleet tanker cruising through a long swell in their classic submarine profile. They were great ships, incredibly strong and well-engined but very, very wet in anything of a sea or swell. TIDEFLOW regularly steamed at over 19 knots for days in 1971.

As an elect/eng I regarded the old Tides as a nightmare - 220v dc with fd fans whose bearings went on a fairly regular basis, try changing those in the tropics. My lungs have given problems ever since.

It is a shame they were d.c. I'm sure that contributed to the lack of modernisation and their early demise. There hulls were strong and they had stacks of power.

LouisB,
They had replaced the oil bath bearings with split roller or ball bearings when I was on them but did you ever have to change an armature at the top of the boiler room in the tropics? We had lost a boiler and then the F.D. fan packed in on one of the two remaining main boilers. Ditto with the lungs.
Sandy.
