rms Ivernia Mersey 1955

rms Ivernia Mersey 1955

acrylic on board size 12 x 30 inches.
Painting based partly on a black and white photo in an old copy of the Liverpool Echo,I have used artistic license to move the Clarence dock power station closer to the Tate and Lyle building to get them both in the painting,I have also included the Vigilant and the Alexandra tug boat in the picture,The picture shows the rms Ivernia moving down river to Canada dock to unload cargo after disembarking passengers at the Princes Landing stage on November 24th 1955.
She is passing the salvage operation to raise the coaster ss Bannprince which sank after a collision with a small tanker ss Juno, she sank in less than 10 minutes, her crew of 9 where rescured but one died later, her hull can be seen between the 2 Camel barges.
The Mersey docks and Harbour board fire and salvage vessel Vigilant is shown nearby, the Alexandra tug is escorting the Ivernia,I may have made some mistakes but will correct if told otherwise.

Very nice with this background of the Liverpool industry with the different stories of the ships and the IVERNIA which had a long career.
Nice Dave!

Can't find anything wrong with this one Dave, a painting that tells a couple of stories.
Nice one.

Thanks Fred,I forgot tp do an important fire hose on the Vigilant, done some more research on the Bannprince,on the 12th November 1955 she was outward bound fully laden with coal for Colraine NI,there was a thick fog and a strong ebbing tide the ship that she had a collision with was the Swedish tanker inward bound with a cargo of Motor oil,the crew of the Bannprince where taken by surprise some of them did.nt have time to get lifejackets and as she keeled over her life boat was submerged so they had to take to the cold water trying to share lifejackets.luckly for the them the coaster Ocean coast outward bound saw them and anchoured at the Queens channel Q15 bouy and lowred her lifeboats whilst at the same time sending out a message which another coaster the Southern coast heard and lowered her lifeboats. The boats found the crew in a state of exhaustion and starting to drift apart, the ocean coast picked up 6 of the crew and the Souhern coast picked up 3 crew, thet where all transferred to the New Brighton Lifeboat then taken to hospital sadly Bannprinces 2 nd engineer died.

A tragic accident indeed, not many ships had Radar in those days and collisions were not infrequent while near misses were not given a second thought. A couple of years ago a ferry got close to an out bound ship and it made headlines in the Echo and the skipper was sent for 'extra training', how things have changed.

Dave, Thanks or posting this painting and also of the additional information. I siled in Ivernia in'67.. as deck Boy, when she was FRANCONIA. This class looked perfect in black or white livery. Even Cunard's green livery worked well on FRANCONIA and CARMANIA.
