"The steamship Ruth loading 30,000 feet of lumber--looking southwest from the foot of Wood Street toward the ACL wharves on the Sampit River with the ACL lumberyards in the background, Steamships such as this made regular calls in Georgetown in the early 1900's. Two Clyde Line steamers made weekly round trips from Georgetown to New York, stopping at Wilmington on each voyage, and the Atlantic Coast Steamship Company operated a fleet of steamers between Georgetown, New York and Boston. Numerous sailing vessels also called at Georgetown to load such cargoes as lumber and naval stores, a practice that continued until the outbreak of World War II".
