Ships Nostalgia banner

This is a war-time photograph of a young ship's engineer at the controls of what I would take to be a motor ship. It appeared on the back cover of a publication produced by the Ministry of War Transport. The title is:- Merchantmen At War: price, one shilling and nine pence (8.75p.).
Just imagine being confined in the bowels of a ship in a convoy under attack from aircraft, U.Boat, and add to that the explosions of depth charges and the racket of gunfire.
Would be interesting to know if anyone can recognise the type of engine.

Sister Eleff, I note you have an eye for a good looking bloke! I'm sorry not to be able to give you a name or any other detail: I would love to know which ship he was at the controls of. Regards, Hugh.

Despite my misgiving's about U.M.S. and for the reason's given by Hugh, U.M.S. look's like a good bet in a Wartime Situation!!.
