Does anybody have any details (beyond standard specs) or recollections of this ship, or her sisters (African(s) Comet, Mercury, Dawn & Meteor, Neptune & Sun)?

There were six built in the early 1960's for Farrell Line of New York. They were Named African Sun African Dawn African Comet African Mercury African Neptune and African Meteor. Their MARAD designation was C4-S-58a and they were lavishly designed and fitted out for the break bulk trade from the US East Coast to South West , South and East Africa, They carried significant amounts of liquid and refrigerated cargo as well as twelve passengers. They were always fully booked out as well as home bound. I was vacation relief Chief Engineer on all six vessels and was finally given African Comet as my very own, African Comet still holds the speed record from New York to Capetown making the passage out in slightly over twelve days.

A small point of interest, the ship is seen in the movie The French Connection as the vessel used to transport the Lincoln to New York

I was lucky enough to get a "job" on the African Mercury as a 'student observer' the summer of 1969. We sailed to South Africa stopping at Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, and Durban. Quite an adventure for a then sixteen year old.
