ss United States - Asbestos Wasteland

This photo is from 1983, taken from onboard Barber Priam. (Ref. my reply to Savannah). As you can see, only one side was painted. Has she been scrapped? Or is she just one festering, rusting mass of Toxic Waste (Asbestos) still? I believe that she wrecked her turbines trying to take the Blue Riband and was not condemned earlier because she was kept on the reserve list as a hospital ship. Please compare this photo to the images at the top of the main page!

She is rotting away in Philadelphia and has been for some time now. You can see some pictures I took of her about a year ago in my gallery.

SS United States suffered no major mechanical breakdowns, RE Turbine Damage, on her maiden voyage or at any other time during her career. She was laid up in 1969. Interiors auctioned off in 1984 and towed to Turkey in 1992 for asbestos removal. She is laid up in Philadelphia right now - either a blank slate for reuse or for scrapping.

If this particular photo was taken in 1983, the Big U would have been laid up at the NIT pier in Norfolk, Virginia.

It stupifies me to no end some of the statements made on this site. With on-line assets such as Google, Wikipedia or Yahoo fact checking is easy.

True, Bob, but personal experience tells me that Wiki is only as good as the info it's given. It doesn't always follow that it's accurate. Check several sources and you're more likely to come up with the answers, one of those sources being right here, of course!

Yes, this is Norfolk, Virginia. I remember that part of the cargo coming aboard were crates of Zippo lighters!

Hi Phil,
When we tried to get on, the obviously drunk watchman threw empty bottles at us. We didn't insist!

That is an amazing statement! The asbestos was removed in the mid-1990s. Asbestos is obviously not a good thing, but as long as it is not disturbed and proper precautions are taken, the risk with it is very low.

OlympicNut,
Thanks for your comment - I was commenting on her state in 1983, I have subsequently learned of recent developments. Unfortunately, I can't help thinking that she should go to razor blades. A more dignified end. I don't think that there is a snowball's chance that she will ever be restored.
Best Regards,
Dave
