STRATHEWE

STRATHEWE

Strathewe with a large deck cargo. I believe this was a cargo of Army ramped landing craft for Port Stanley, Falkland Islands. All other details as the previous photo.

The P&O STRATHEWE seen departing Southampton Western Docks on the 28/06/82 bound for the Falklands, she had been at berth 107 whilst loading her cargo, as far as I am aware this was her only ever call at the port and I can remember noting her in port at the time, the Rangitara was ahead of her at the time at berth 106 also getting readied for duty in the Falklands.

The deck cargo looks like Ramped Craft Logistic (RCL), of which the last was only decommissioned from Army service a year or so ago.

It was already mentioned in the photo details regarding her deck cargo and where she was heading off to!

Nobody mentioned the actual class of landing craft in the photo (RCL - for those interested), which as I said were in use by the Army and based at Marchwood until a year ago.

Was this the first trip to the Falklands?I think the strathewe did several trips.I have a lovely photo of the ship in the Falklands at anchor some where.
Also remember sitting in the mess room one night down there, the ship swung round on the chain and hit the rocks.
We also took some morticians down and squaddies.good bunch a good crack, the war was over when we arrived.

Thank you SEAN for confirming the date of her departure from Southampton and I think I have a photo of her along side berth 107. I will post it when I come across it, regards Tom.

Chris I think this was her first trip to the Falklands and I don`t know how many she made down there, probably a few. It would be great if you could post the photo of her at anchor and any other info you may have while she was down there. Regards Tom.
