The above picture may be old enough to be a picture of Sørlandet as a school-ship. The water tank, and the seeming small size and consistent blue dress of the non-white-capped, does indicate so. And then I'd say: you're absolutely right they're in uniform, they would be, all of them, and at all times. Officers as well as cadets, same as in the Norwegian navy.
I'd like to go back to the picture that started this uniform discussion and say I'm sorry that such a nice photograph should start this quarrell. And that you can all parade around with golden braids on your pyjamases as far as I am concerned. The base of my contention is that in an inegalitarian system where money gives some a head start, one must expect a few to grumble. I did not react negatively to the Captain personally, but seriously: if someone sees a nautical equivalent of "Misses Bucket" in the man, I can well understand him. And I am willing to defend his right to do so. And in so doing defend a few good shipmates that went to sea to escape some of the oppression built into our society, and showed a bit of proud opposition to Norwegian elitist fools among our "striped gang". (And put some pride and fighting spirit into a young me). That, I believe understandable, view is the one I am willing to defend, and not the lack of white caps in Norway. That's is a matter that is thematically connected, but really a sidetrack. (Flag waving I can only do tongue in cheek, as a game, so I'll want to leave it whenever the matter turns serious).
I'd also like to say I resent the "guru" epithet. For me to act as if possessing any special kind of nautical expertise, outside that aquired through some trips on Sørlandet etc. and readings on sailing ships, would in this forum simply not have been possible.
Lovely picture of a lovely ship above. Regards, Stein.
