Type 42 Sea Dart Magazine Arrangement

Type 42 Sea Dart Magazine Arrangement

When the missile trolleys were in motion, it was a very impressive sight, heaps of Hydraulics at work. Missiles being hoisted, struck down.....brilliant!
Note how the entire Missile stowage arrangement is resiliently mounted, on 'X' Mounts.

we used have one of these in the Engine shop barrow, in the "pit" it was used for training in latter years, but was removed in about 2012

Clever but desperately inefficient with regards to space and moving parts when compared to a VLS design.

Agreed Tom, I guess the only advantage over VLS would be access to the Missiles if any low-level maintenance was required. Apart from that, the arrangement was the next step for Guided Missile handling arrangements along from Seaslug. It also allows, as we have seen on previous pictures, the ability to replenish missiles at Sea.
Do you know if the Type 45 VLS can be reloaded without going alongside?

Not sure about the Type 45 VLS Nige, I know the USN could for the Mk41, when I was in USS Philippine sea in the med, she had a small folding crane as part of the VLS systems (both forrard and aft) which they could use to manoeuvre the canisters into the silos after transfer at sea.
