VL also did charters, I remember the German ship "Renate Jacob" had such a funnel in 1975.

Interestingly Eric the slide has "Ger" written on it, so it could well be
a charter as you suggest.Nothing wrong with your memory!(Thumb)

Update, following Eric"s clue This could be the RENATE JACOB
in charterers colours as her owners markings (Ernst Jacob-W.Ger)
are clearly visible beneath the dark blue.

Hi Guys!
While HANSEATIC VAASA LINE (VL), a Finnish-German joint venture is quite correct, also that URSULA JACOB and her sister RENATE JACOB traded to the USWC under VL Charter (well Jacob was a partner in that enterprise) in the early 1970s, I doubt that it is either of the two ships. The funnel of the URSULA and RENATE was slightly different and the entire deck and accomodation ladder arrangement also compared to the picture. I would think it is a German Liberty Replacement, TRAMKO type ship or so, also operated by Jacob at the same time. However, I am currently not aware which one it could have been in VL livery.
I have posted a picture of the aft view of the URSULA JACOB. You will note that the funnel has a mast on the forward side holding the typhoon and navigation lights, missing in the picture posted. Also, the accommodation was a big block with only ladders on the aft side leading to the bridge deck. The only access provided to get to the navigation bridge and funnel was by means of monkey ladders just behind the bridge wings / wheel house doors. So, I think the vessel pictured at Portland can NOT be the RENATE or URSULA.
The reference picture is to be found here: http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/184713
For further reference, please see the picture of the GA Plan with deck and ladder details for the superstructure which may be found here: http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/184724
(O.K., that one got deleted! If you need to see it, contact me directly!)
Hmm? Seems still to be there...different Category though! http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=184742
The funnel seems to be distinct! The first ship of the series was called LUISE LEONHARDT and was missing the mast attached to the funnel and also had a different arrangement of the superstructure. It could have been LUISE LEONHARDT although I am not aware of her having been chartered to HVL...
LUISE was later trading as MAERSK PINTO.

Oh, my board name FSG631 is the yard number from Flensburger Schiffbau of the RENATE JACOB, on which I spent some time in 1973!
Cheers!

Hi!
I am pretty sure now. The funnel with the VL marking for Hanseatic Vaasa Line is that of the LUISE LEONHARDT, the first ship of the class SEMI CONTAINER LINER 17/18 built at Felnsburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft between 1970 and 1973.
The three Jacob ships, URSULA, RENATE and LUTZ JACOB had a different superstructure and hold / hatch as well as boom arrangement. But the funnels were the same. Comparing the superstructures, the picture matches the arrangement for the LUISE LEONHARDT.
Funny though, I was not aware of the LUISE LEONHARDT having been employed in the same service...
Here it comes:
LUISE LEONHARDT - IMO 7048087 Flensburger yard Number 627, launched 1970 - 75 MAERSK MANGO - 78 MAERSK PINTO - 81 LUISE LEONHARDT - 88 SUNPASSAT - 91 CHIMBORAZO - 92 LUISE LEONHARDT - 96 ABDUL S. - Scrapped November 2003 Gadani Beach
Picture: http://media.shipspotting.com/uploads/photos/rw/341747/Ship+Photo+Luise+Leonhardt.jpg
The hull and general outline of the ships with their Stulken Derricks was very similar. Also, the Leonhardt & Blumberg funnel markings also match the X-welds. The blue in the picture is the blue of the HVL funnel...the Jacob as well as the L&B funnels were black...only the logo of Jacob was blue.
L&B Logo : http://hampshireflag.co.uk/world-flags/images/d/de~lb.gif it can also be seen in the flag flying behind the HVL flag in the top left insert of the picture posted! The L&B Houseflag!!!!
Hope that helps!
