The Ranger A class trawlers didn`t have A frame gantry`s after Ranger Ajax was found to be top heavy on trials, her gantry was removed and replaced by rollers on 2 stanchions with 2 turtle blocks according to Mike Thompson`s book Hull & Grimsby Stern Trawling Fleet 1961-88
Hakon is quite correct. Mike T's book has a picture of her as Ranger Appollo SN148 in the configuration shown here and mentions she was renamed 'Turcoman' on the 15Dec 1973, a name previously carried by the old Hull sidewinder H163 1937-48. Quoting further; Because of the limited quotas of fish each British company was allowed to catch, B.U.T. gave preference to the more modern vessels. Turcoman was rarely used and spent most of her time laid up. On 17 May 1977 she was sold for standby work in the oil industry. Her former names are listed,
X Ranger Appolo 1973
X Turcoman 1977
X Kilsyth 1983
X Putford Protector 1987
Now Port King. (1988 the year of publication)
On the posted picture there's some lettering aft of the Reg. I have tried to extract it but with no success, I would need a better resolution image to crack it.
Seems a bit stupid to build more of the same class of trawlers if the 1st one was top heavy, I mean why not put more weight onto the keel, or stretch them?
