VARD, built at Oslo in 1930 as LIDO, which was purchased by Egil Naesheim of Haugesund and renamed in 1954, was photographed passing Portishead, inbound for Bristol City Docks exactly fifty years ago today, on 15th August 1970. In January 1971 she arrived at Flushing to be broken up.

Built in 1930 as " LIDO " at Nylands Mekaniske Verksted A/S Oslo Norway for Dampskibsselskabet A/S Laly (C. T. Gogstad Rederi & Co A/S Oslo as manager) Oslo Norway. Launched 14/05, completed 11/09.

Tonnage : grt / nrt / tdw - 1.938 brt, 1.133 nrt. 3.150 tdw,
Machinery : Nylands Steam Engine (steam reciprocating) Compound. (2 x 14,8”–2 x 31,5”,Stroke: 31,5”) - 175 nhp.
Main Boiler : 2 Nylands Scottish Boilers (11,3’ x 11,3) w/2 furnace.Total Heating Area 2.596 ft2.Work Press 200 psi.
Steam Gen : 1 x 7,5 kw.
Steam Gen : 1 x 6,5 kw.
Aux.Engine : 1 x 6 kw.

1940 Due to WW II Norwegian Nortraship became managers in April.
1945 Returned to Owner.
1954 Sold in April for GBP 60.000 to Vards Rederi (Egil Næsheim Rederi A/S Haugesund) Haugesund Norway,renamed " VARD ".
1963 Transferred to Egil Næsheims Rederi A/S (Same manager) Haugesund Norway.
1971 Sold 28/01 for GBP 17.000 to H. P. Heuvelman, Vlissingen, the Netherlands for demolition.Re-sold to breakers at Antwerpen, Belgium for demolition by J. de Smedt.

" VARD " was the last steam ship in Haugesund Norway.
